Background on Constitutional Convention

Every 20 years, the citizens of Illinois are allowed to vote on whether or not they wish to see a new constitutional convention. The next such vote, the first since 1988, will take place during the general election on November 4, 2008. If the ballot measure passes, the state legislature will be required to call and fund a new constitutional convention. Two delegates from each state senatorial district —116 delegates in all—will be elected to review the present state constitution and propose any changes they deem necessary in how the state is run. Any citizen may run as a delegate from his or her district. The recommendations of the constitutional convention will then be either accepted or rejected by the voters of Illinois.
