We have tried to talk with the public employee unions, but so far they are not really open to the possibility of supporting or even being neutral about a constitutional convention. We have tried to convince them that we are not out to take away their pensions, but that many other issues need to be addressed. Many teachers do understand this. One of the biggest supporters of the constitutional convention at my church is an active union teacher.
If you have any ideas on how to approach this, we'd be glad to hear them. I think what will happen is that IF we succeed in getting a "yes" vote on the constitutional convention, then we will be able to work together with the public employee unions to make sure that the delegates elected to a constitutional convention are committed to protecting the pensions of public employees. If the vote fails, of course, public employees will have nothing to worry about for another twenty years, but we will have lost a great opportunity to push for other changes in Springfield.
