Anyone who is surprised that a recall amendment will not be on the ballot this November please raise your hand. I thought not. The politicians in Springfield are never going to vote to make themselves more accountable to the people.
There is good news, however. We citizens of Illinois have a once-every-twenty-year opportunity to vote to change our constitution no matter what the politicians say. All we have to do is vote "yes" on the measure that is already on the ballot to call a new constitutional convention. If we do, there is nothing they can do to prevent us from looking at things like recall, the merit selection of judges, tax reform and any other issue we think will make the government work for, not against, us.
"Whatever it takes," the Tribune said in its editorial of May 1. Whatever it takes is for us to exercise our constitutional right to change our constitution. This opportunity only comes up once a generation. If not now, when? If not us, who?
I trust the Tribune editorial board will come to the logical conclusion of its vehement support of the recall amendment and urge a "yes" vote on a new constitutional convention in November. Everybody who believes they will, please raise your hand. I thought so.
